•Starch/gelatin (S/G) films with three natural waxes were prepared by extrusion blowing.•S/G film with beeswax achieved a highly hydrophobic surface.•The waxes existed in S/G films as crystalline particles with various sizes.•The addition of natural waxes significantly affected the gelatinization of starch.
