Information technologies are already involved in all aspects of our everyday lives, thus, the significance of cybersecurity is continuously rising. Given the popularity and rise of Software Defined Networks, Internet of Things networks, and Data Centers networks, these networks are especially interesting for attackers. The great danger comes from sophisticated hackers who are using Low-Rate Distributed Denial of Service (LR-DDoS) attacks. LR-DDoS attack involves subtly overwhelming a target system with a relatively small volume of malicious traffic to disrupt services while attempting to evade immediate detection. Although it is hard to make such attacks, it is also very hard to detect and defend against LR-DDoS attacks. In this paper, we present a survey of LR-DDoS attacks. This survey presents types of LR-DDoS attacks along with state-of the-art detection and defense solutions for each of them.
