Generating noise at the output of directional sensor in isotropic ambient noise

Most signal processing applications require emulating the noise received at the sensor in ambient noise fields. Efficient algorithms for generating noise at the sensor’s output in spherically or cylindrically isotropic noise fields have been devised for arrays of omnidirectional sensors. However, there are no such algorithms in the literature for directional sensors. Thus, in this paper, algorithms for generating noise received by a directional sensor in the presence of spherically and cylindrically isotropic noise fields are presented. A linear superposition of uncorrected plane waves from all directions is used to model the ambient noise. This method is adequate for situations like deep sea and shallow water. The directional sensor considered here is an Acoustic Vector Sensor (AVS) having one pressure, and three particle velocity sensors co-located orthogonally. Additionally, the spatial-temporal correlation function is used to verify the correctness of the generated noise.
