Investigation on mechanical behavior of shear panel damper under bidirectional loading

In previous research on shear panel dampers (SPDs), the assumption that the damper only experiences in -plane loading has been predominant, neglecting the effects of bidirectional loading. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical behavior of SPDs under bidirectional loading. Cyclic quasi -static tests and numerical simulations were conducted on both unstiffened and stiffened SPDs loaded in the in -plane direction and at a 45 -degree angle, representing unidirectional and bidirectional loading, respectively. The results demonstrate distinct differences in failure mode, yielding, and stress distribution of SPD under bidirectional loading. To further investigate the influence of different loading angles on the mechanical properties of SPD, parametric studies were conducted. The findings reveal that the in -plane yield force of SPD gradually decreases as the loading angle increases, which raises the concern on the potentially overestimated the performance of bidirectional loaded SPD in the in -plane direction during structural design.
