Droop Control Implementation in Bidirectional Step-Up/Down Partial Power Converter for Battery Energy Storage Applications

The droop control is the most common method in decentralized control of the dc microgrids. In this paper, the linear droop control is applied to a battery energy storage system (BESS) using a bidirectional step-up/down (BDSUD) series partial power dc-dc converter (S-PPC). The novelty of the work is that none of the S-PPCs proposed in the literature is examined for their effectiveness in implementing the droop control strategy. The phase shift modulation and flyback secondary modulated conversion method are used to operate the converter in different modes. The simulation results in PSIM software confirm the feasibility of the converter for the given applications and demonstrate an effective droop control implementation strategy combining different converter operating modes in four quadrants.
