•The presence of SOWO had a greater risk of COVID-19 hospitalization, compared to OWO alone.•Sarcopenia augments the risk of worse COVID-19 outcomes, after adjusting for lifestyle factors.•More research on SOWO and its related health outcomes outside geriatric settings is warranted.
