Nonlinear-Carrier Pulse Width Modulation: The Optimization of Wide-Range Operating Buck Converter

Most converter designs overlook the potential benefits of utilizing diverse pulse width modulation (PWM) carriers, resulting in a lack of understanding of how various carriers can enhance system performance. Better performance could be achieved by employing nonlinear carriers instead of linear modulation. In this paper, a nonlinear-carrier PWM is proposed. The influence of nonlinear-carrier PWM on the system is analyzed. The proposed nonlinear-carrier PMW is used to improve the performance of the Buck converter. For any systems with nonlinear input characteristics, the linear input range of the system can be expanded using the proportionally scaled nonlinear input wave as the PWM carrier. The following content will strictly deduce the applicability, analyze nonlinear carriers’ influence on a control system, and propose a mapping relation from nonlinear input properties to nonlinear PWM carrier waves. The simulation results indicate that using nonlinear carrier PWM can enhance the linearity and global response of systems with nonlinear input characteristics.
