Design and Optimization of Permanent-Magnet Vernier Machine with Split-teeth Stator based on Grain-Oriented Silicon Steel

Dual-permanent-magnet vernier machines (DPMVM) have exhibited advanced performances in terms of torque density. However, their core loss is usually higher compared with conventional PM machines. To reduce the core loss of the DPMVM, this paper proposes a novel in-wheel split-teeth dual-permanent-magnet vernier motor (ST-DPMVM) based on grain-oriented silicon steel (GO-SS). By replacing the non-oriented silicon steel (NGO-SS) stator with a GO-SS stator, the core loss of the ST-DPMVM can be reduced significantly and the efficiency can be improved. Four different segmentation modes of the stator core are investigated. One segmentation mode with better performance is selected and comparative study is done between this GO-SS ST-DPMVM, conventional ST-DPMVM, as well as conventional permanent magnet motor. The results show that the proposed GO-SS ST-DPMVM has higher torque density and efficiency as opposed to the conventional in-wheel PM motor.
