EFB (empty fruit bunches) of oil palm for 2G ethanol production

Due to the potential environmental risks caused by the waste generated by oil palm industries for food, bioenergy, and pharmacological production, studies of waste reuse are desirable seen as a promising alternative to obtain products in a sustainable way. In this sense, the objective of the study is to evaluate the viability of using empty fruit bunches for 2G ethanol production, via biological processes. The mass balances were developed using the Microsoft Excel through selected data from investigations carried out in the project considering the type of treatment and scaled to 1 ton. Data were collected from eight studies/pretreatments and a database was constructed for the simulation, via biological treatments for 2G ethanol production. The simulations showed that the pretreatments did not result in the best sugar concentrations. Among the analyzed options, the pretreatment 4 had the best yields, with microorganism Candida pelliculosa, which was able to degrade different sugars.
