Correlation Of Dynamic Balance With Static Balance And Proprioception In Individuals With Functional Ankle Instability

PURPOSE: To determine the correlation of dynamic balance with static balance and ankle proprioception in individuals with functional ankle instability (FAI). METHODS: Thirty-one subjects with unilateral FAI (15 females and 16 males, 21.6 ± 1.1 years old, 169.5 ± 8.2 cm, 64.9 ± 11.9 kg, Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool score is 16.8 ± 3.8) were included in the study. Static balance represented by the Mean Velocity of the Center of Pressure (COP) in Anterior-Posterior (AP) and the Medial-Lateral (ML) directions and 95% confidence ellipse area of the COP movements (95% AREA), which were measured using a force platform (KISTLER 9260AA6, Germany) during single-leg standing with affected limb for 20 seconds. Dynamic balance was assessed using the Y-Balance test (YBT) in the anterior (ANT), posteromedial (PM), and posterolateral (PL) directions. The ankle proprioception during drop landing was assessed with ankle inversion discrimination apparatus for landing (AIDAL). Pearson Correlation Analysis was performed to examine the relationship between dynamic balance and static balance and ankle proprioception. RESULTS: ANT dynamic balance was weakly correlated with 95% AREA (r = 0.367, p = 0.042) and Velocity-ap (r = 0.361, p = 0.046). PM dynamic balance was moderately correlated with 95% AREA (r = 0.419, p = 0.019), Velocity (r = 0.405, p = 0.024) and Velocity-ap (r = 0.456, p = 0.010). PL dynamic balance was moderately correlated with 95% AREA (r = 0.416, p = 0.020) and weakly correlated with Velocity-ap (r = 0.367, p = 0.042) and ankle proprioception (r = 0.393, p = 0.029). CONCLUSION: The dynamic balance of FAI individuals was weakly to moderately correlated to static balance, while dynamic balance was weakly correlated to ankle proprioception during drop landing.This work was supported by the Shandong Province Natural Science Foundation (ZR2020QC091).
