Design and Simulation of 4MJ Air-Core Pulsed Alternator

Pulsed alternator concentrates the functions of inertial energy storage, energy conversion and power conditioning, which can output the mechanical energy stored in the rotor in the form of high-energy pulse current. It is an ideal power source for driving electromagnetic weapons such as electromagnetic rail gun and coil gun. The design and performance analysis of an air-core pulsed alternator were completed by combining analytical calculation and finite element simulation. A 3D finite element electromagnetic field model close to reality was established, and the working process of self-excitation and discharge was simulated. Finite element simulation models suitable for electromagnetic field-temperature field and electromagnetic field-stress field were established in Ansys Workbench respectively, and the maximum temperature rise of the alternator in each round was calculated, which provided a basis for formulating the working strategy and temperature rise management of the alternator under natural cooling conditions. The stress of each rotor component during the no-load stage and discharge stage of the alternator was simulated and analyzed, and the failure of carbon fiber composite material was evaluated with special processing module.
