摘要
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) were considered a high-risk group for severe SARS-CoV-2 infections. Here we present data on the incidence and clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infections from a single paediatric CF-centre in Vienna (Austria) from the beginning of the pandemic in February 2020 until October 2022. In this retrospective single-centre cohort study, we collected data on SARS-CoV-2 infections from 138 patients with CF (age 0–21 years) over 32 months after the onset of the pandemic. A confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection was defined by a positive real-time RT-PCR test. Symptoms, severity and duration of the disease were assessed. Eighty-four confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections were reported in 75 patients, of which nine had a re-infection. Most of the infections occurred in the era of the Omicron variant (79,8%). Forty-two of affected patients (56,0%) were vaccinated at least twice with a COVID-19 vaccine at the time of infection. There were 18 asymptomatic infections (21%). Eighteen infections (21,4%) were categorised as minimal, due to unspecific symptoms, such as headache and/or fatigue. Forty-three infection (51,2%) were categorised as mild (< 7 days lasting symptoms with a good general condition) and 5 (6,0%) as moderate (> 7 days lasting symptoms with reduced general condition). Most frequently reported symptoms were rhinitis, fatigue, cephalea, cough and fever. All cases were manageable in an outpatient setting, none needed oxygen therapy or hospital admission. Mean duration of symptoms was 4 days (0–14 days). All patients recovered completely and no long-term post-COVID-19 symptoms were observed. In this single-centre cohort, all confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections in paediatric and young adult patients with CF showed an uncomplicated course without long-term sequelae.
