Translating the science of learning into effective instructional techniques is a science unto itself. This chapter will describe active versus passive learning. It will discuss instructional strategies based on active learning and the modern trend for case-based presentation curricula in medical education. It will introduce the concepts of active learning across the methodologies and class sizes discussed in the remainder of the text. Finally, this chapter will describe the cognitive load theory and its application for the instructional design of medical education teaching sessions.
