Current situation of coeducation at school: non- sexist use of language and didactic materials

Taking into account the gender perspective is fundamental to put an end to the transmission of sexism. For this reason, it is a priority to review textbooks, their language, teaching materiais and the values associated with them. Gender identities are still being questioned and many voices denounce thatthere is still much to be done in schools to achieve real equality. This study aims to determine the situation of the use of non-sexist language in the classroom and the adequacy of teaching materiais used in the school environment. it is a case study, in which a total of 530 people participated by means of a questionnaire addressed to teachers and management teams and seven focus groups carried out with teachers, families and students. The results reveal that there is still a lack of awareness of the need to use a real non-sexist language in the teaching process and that the criterion of equality does not always prevail in the choice of teaching materiais. In conclusion, it is necessary to adopt more awareness-raising and intervention measures to make equality a priority in initial and continuous teacher training.
