摘要
School-based melanoma education programs have reduced melanoma incidence in Australia; similar results could be produced in the US. This study sought to evaluate efficacy of John Wayne Cancer Foundation Block the Blaze (JWCFBTB) presentations in modulating behavior change among middle and high schoolers in Texas and California. Additionally, we assessed sociodemographic and state variations in behavior change. Following JWCFBTB presentations, a Likert-scale behavior change questionnaire was distributed. Respondents provided race, age, gender, parent education level, and whether they are first- generation Americans. Chi-square tests were used to evaluate demographic differences and four logistic regression models determined predictors of behavior change. When asked if information presented would result in sunscreen use, sun and tan avoidance, and skin checks, for each question, at least 83% of respondents selected agree/strongly agree. Chi-square tests showed significant gender, race, and grade level differences in the percentage of participants selecting agree/strongly agree. Logistic regression results showed males, grades 5-8, and Whites/Caucasians were significantly less likely to change their behavior. Notably, students with 5 or more prior sunburns were significantly less likely to avoid sun exposure and Texas students were significantly more likely to conduct skin checks following presentations. Findings suggest that although skin cancer education is beneficial overall, it may be less impactful in certain groups. Males and those with more sunburns, who might be greater risk-takers, could respond to earlier intervention. Melanoma education every year may benefit grade 5-8 students. Finally, targeting skin cancer presentations to younger, minority groups, with less melanoma knowledge, may be warranted.
