摘要
Most dermatology residency programs emphasize the importance of resident research but requirements for research vary widely [1]. Emory Dermatology requires residents to work with a faculty mentor throughout residency, submit a research proposal, present progress updates, and complete a final project before graduation. This program evaluation aimed to assess outcomes of the research program, including alignment of program goals with resident experiences. The evaluation also aimed to elicit feedback to inform program development. We conducted semi-structured interviews with current residents in 6/2022-9/2022. Interviews were transcribed, coded independently by 2 coders, and analyzed inductively and deductively. Among 20 residents, 16 (4 PGY-2, 7 PGY-3, 5 PGY-4; 80% response rate) participated and provided diverse descriptions of experiences with their scholarly projects. The vast majority (75%) reported overall positive experiences. Scholarly projects allowed residents to discover clinical interests, network with faculty, submit publications, and gain familiarity with research logistics.
