摘要
Increased demand for gyms exercise have as cause body image dissatisfaction related to anthropometric indicators, however motivations that support exercise practices seems to not drive people to an active lifestyle. Our study aimed to analyze relationship between body image, anthropometric indicators, motivation and adherence to strength training. 54 gym goers from Florianopolis, Santa Catarina were investigated (sample size, correlation between 0,35 and 0,40, I±= 0,05 e I²= 0,20). Anthropometric values, body image perception and motivation were analyzed. Data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Body image discrepancy was positively related to external regulation (r=0,27; p<0,05). Intrinsec motivation (r=-0,28; p<0,05) and self-determination index (r=-0,37; p<0,01) were negatively related to body image discrepancy. Body Mass Index (r=0,34, p<0,01) and Body Fat (r=0,33; p<0,01) were positively related to body image discrepancy, higher body mass index and body fat increase body image discrepancy. Our study observed 53,7% of gym goers dropouts. Dropouts presented more amotivation for physical exercise practice (p=0,02) and more body image discrepancy (p=0,04) than adherents. Body image dissatisfaction is related to anthropometric indicators and motivation. Gym goers dropouts are characterized with more amotivation for physical exercise practice and more discrepancy of body image than adherents, resulting in dropout from exercise.
