Preliminary Study of a Ka-band Phase-locked High Power Microwave Amplifier Operating in Hybrid Theory

To achieve the coherent power combination of Ka-band HPM generators, a Phase-locked High Power Microwave amplifier (PHPMA) operating in hybrid theory is proposed and simulated in this paper. The PHPMA is made up of two parts: pre-modulation region and energy exchange region. The pre-modulation region is only used for preliminary modulation of the intense relativistic electron beams (IREB), in which the IREB barely lose any energy. The energy exchange region is used for further modulation of the IREB and realize the beam-wave energy conversion. The PHPMA combines the phase-locking characteristics of amplifiers with the high parameters' tolerance of oscillators. By the proposed Ka-band PHPMA, a HPM with power of 550 MW at the frequency of 29.0 GHz is obtained. The diode voltage, current, magnetic field and the input RF microwave power are 440 kV, 5.35 kA, 1 T and 5 kW, respectively, corresponding to a gain of 50.4 dB.
