Design and Implementation of a Novel Self-Tuning Single Input Fuzzy Controller for PMSM

Conventionally, PI controllers are utilized in the vector control with voltage feedback field-weakening structure of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM). However, PMSMs mostly operate in wide torque-speed envelopes which require better adaptability to prevent performance degradation in the control system against emerging nonlinearities. In this paper, we propose a novel Self Tuning Single Input Type 1 Fuzzy Logic Controller (ST-SIT1-FLC) which manipulates the speed control characteristics in an online manner to prevent performance degradation in different operating regions of the PMSM. For the design of ST-SIT1-FLC, we present a novel geometrical design approach that facilitates the design and allows easy characteristic shaping by defining a desired aggressiveness/smoothness level within a desired region around the origin. We provide all details of the design of ST-SIT1-FLC for the PMSM. To analyze the control performance of the proposed controller, we conducted experimental tests on a real-world PMSM in different operating regions with two inclusive test scenarios. The experimental results revealed that the proposed ST-SIT1-FLC improves the speed control performance and enables the adoption of lower control margins in the voltage feedback control loop, thus increasing drive efficiency.
