Air Permeability of Protective Face Masks

Protective face masks have become crucial in safeguarding individuals from airborne particles and pathogens. Among the various factors influencing mask performance, air permeability stands out as a critical determinant of breathability. This study focuses on evaluating the air permeability of seven different face masks and respirators, examining its relationship with mask characteristics and airflow direction. The level of air permeability directly impacts the ease of inhalation and exhalation, significantly influencing wearer comfort. Masks with higher air permeability offer smoother breathing experiences by reducing resistance during respiration. This attribute is vital in preventing discomfort, claustrophobic sensations, and breathing difficulties, particularly during extended periods of mask usage. In this research, we determined the air permeability of the selected masks and respirators and investigated how various mask characteristics, such as layers, thickness, weight and bulk density affect their air permeability. Furthermore, we examined the role of airflow direction on mask performance, exploring any notable differences in permeability between “out-in” and “in-out” airflow.
