Research on the parametric rolling of the KCS container ship

In the second generation intact stability criteria formulated by IMO, parametric rolling is one of the five failure modes. In this paper, a method of equivalent roll damping is used to study the parametric rolling of the KCS container ship. This method converts the nonlinear roll damping calculated by CFD into linear roll damping. Then the parametric rolling of the KCS container ship in regular waves is predicted based on the Rankine panel method. To compare the effectiveness of this method, the improved Ikeda’s empirical formula is used to calculate the roll damping and predict the parametric rolling, and the results of the two methods are compared with the test results of the KCS container ship. Finally, the influence of initial roll angles, the ratio of the encounter frequency ω_e to the rolling natural frequency ω_roll and the wave height on parametric rolling are studied. The results show that the calculation results of the equivalent roll damping method are in good agreement with the experimental results, and the parameter rolling can be predicted with high accuracy. The initial roll angle will not affect the roll angle when the stable situation is acquired, but it will affect the time to reach the steady state. The range of ω_e/ . -0ptω_roll can be quite wide when parametric rolling occurs. The wave height will affect the range of ω_e/ . -0ptω_roll when the parametric rolling occurs.
