Large-scale commercialization of AI in school-based environments

While widespread adoption of AI-based educational technology has been hampered in the past by insufficient access to technology, the barriers now are primarily related to incorporating such technologies into the culture and processes of schools. AI-based technologies, by their nature, make complex decisions, often based on vast quantities of data. One strong challenge for such systems is to present such data in a way that supports effective educational practice. This includes both communicating insights from data in a way that is actionable by teachers and administrators. In this chapter, we focus on formal education within the United States and discuss three areas where AI can make an impact on adoption by schools: personalization, assessment and communication with stakeholders in the educational environment, including teachers, parents and administrators.
