A coping subscale for autistic children: Revisiting the dimensionality of the emotion regulation and social skills questionnaire

•Dimensionality of the Emotion Regulation & Social Skills Questionnaire was examined.•Exploratory item factor analysis revealed a 3-factor solution provided the best fit.•One factor measures coping ability across different contexts for autistic children.•Two factors measure ability to initiate and engage in social interactions.•Revised structure improves identification of specific socio-emotional needs.
