Constrained layer damping for mitigating vibration of a rotating disk-drum coupled structure

•A dynamic model is developed for a rotating disk-shell structure treated with CLD.•Modal and rotor experiments are conducted to validate the proposed modeling approach.•Location and thickness ratio of CLD have significant influence on damping effect.•Modes with lager circumferential wave numbers are less sensitive to coupling stiffness change.
