Social media and learning

This article synthesizes over 15 years of research on social media and learning culled from recent literature reviews, the authors' own research, and other studies. The aims of this work are threefold. First, we introduce readers to the field of social media and learning, defining key terms and emphasizing various forms of learning with and within social media. Second, we highlight three topics on the cutting edge of social media and learning research: new literacies, civic engagement, and professional learning networks. Third, within each topic we summarize relevant affordances and constraints of social media and emerging issues in education. The article concludes with challenges and opportunities related to social media and learning as we consider the future of education.
