Sensitivity Analysis of the Cascaded Virtual Synchronous Generator based Grid Forming Inverter

In contrast to the other grid forming inverters (GFMI), virtual synchronous generators (VSGs) have gained a high popularity as it is capable of closely emulating the inherent characteristics of the synchronous generators (SGs) utilising a comparatively simple controller architecture. However, a detailed sensitivity analysis of the VSG based controller under the different system conditions and the effect of inertia (J), damping coefficient (D) under the system perturbations have not been thoroughly investigated yet. In order to address this, a cascaded VSG based controller is proposed and the performance of the VSG converter is evaluated under the varying load conditions and under different network impedance. Furthermore, criticality of the J and D parameters on each condition is analysed using the MATLAB/Simulink platform. This will allow the system planners to have an understanding on how the different system perturbations, and critical parameters of the VSG controller affect the performance when deploying GFMIs in the power system.
