Overview of Research on Energy Storage Participating in Frequency Oscillation Suppression of New Power Systems with High Hydropower Permeability

The hydropower penetration rate in Southwest China remains at a high level, and it is asynchronously interconnected with multiple regional power grids, presenting weak damping characteristics. And with the gradual increase in the proportion of new energy installation, the inertia of the power system successively decline, and the trouble of frequency oscillation is becoming increasingly prominent. Energy storage possesses the excellent features of bidirectional power regulation and quick reaction. It is very suitable for the frequency oscillation suppression of power systems, which can significantly improve the consumption capacity of renewable energy and the operation efficiency of generator sets. In this paper, the production principle and key affecting factors of frequency oscillation in high hydropower permeability system are analyzed in detail, and the development status of energy storage is described. Then, the research progress and existing problems of energy storage and multi-energy coordinated frequency modulation control strategy are analyzed from the aspects of energy storage self-frequency modulation, auxiliary thermal power frequency modulation and auxiliary new energy frequency modulation. Finally, combining the advantages and disadvantages of centralized and distributed energy storage, as well as relevant policies and future markets, the technology of energy storage participating in frequency oscillation suppression in new power systems with high hydropower permeability is prospected.
