SIMPA -design: A System of Indicators for Monitoring the Learning Process

For teachers, monitoring learning in schools has become a challenge, as it involves keeping track of student learning to make instructional decisions. Teachers use manual and traditional methods to collect, analyze and visualize such tracking, from paper-based questionnaires to using known spreadsheets. It may be time-consuming as 1) data may have poor quality, and 2) the smallest change in a report may take a long time to complete instead of minutes. Hence, this paper proposes a system of indicators different from the traditional methods to monitor the learning process called SIMPA by using Business Intelligence to help teachers to monitor the learning experience. It is applied in one course of robotics workshop of an Ecuadorian school by following the HEFESTO methodology, including visualization and usability assessment. The results showed that designing SIMPA with acceptable usability is feasible.
