Propeller Noise Prediction Capabilities within SU2

Aircraft noise is a major problem in aerospace research, in particular, propeller noise is a concern for several commercial applications. In this work, an efficient framework within SU2 based on the Kirchhoff Ffowcs Williams Hawkings method is investigated. At first a verification suite is implemented to check code accuracy and performance. In this regard, the most basic sound generation mechanisms, monopole and dipole sources, are considered. Next, the computational results are validated with experimental data from various sources to assess the accuracy with respect to real world cases. In addition, a Rotating Reference Frame approach is implemented to the acoustic computation, in order to improve the computational efficiency of the code and to allow larger and faster simulations towards propeller design and optimization.
