•First work of measuring the full-field displacement and strain of a wind turbine blade with a 3D Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV).•High spatial resolution scan of the entire blade with over 800 3D points.•First work of correlating the full-field strain measurement with the finite element model having anisotropic composite material.•Establish the relationship between the internal blade structural configuration and the global strain distribution measurement.
