•Using specific teaching methodologies can effectively refine DNP students' project proposals.•Writing the DNP project proposal in sections makes writing a DNP project proposal document more manageable.•Providing ungraded ongoing feedback for draft revisions is a low-stakes strategy that receives positive student feedback.•A DNP project proposal course taken prior to DNP project implementation can be a successful and sustainable strategy.
