This paper presents predictive rotor current control of a variable speed wind energy conversion system. The conversion chain uses a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) model employing finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MFC) for the controlling purpose of rotor side converter (RSC). The standard formulation selects the optimal switching state of the converter minimizing the error between predicted orthogonal rotor current components and their reference values which is then applied to the RSC of DFIG. The modified formulation enables RSC of DFIG to track the reference current with additional features of reduced switching frequency and voltage tracking ensuring better performance.
