EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DISEASE BURDEN OF NON-INSULIN-DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS WITHOUT COMPLICATIONS BASED ON ROUTINELY COLLECTED HEALTH INSURANCE CLAIMS DATA

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major burden for both individuals and the health care sector as well, even if no complications have developed yet. Our aim was to determine the epidemiological disease burden of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus without complications in Hungary. Data were derived from the financial database of the Hungarian National Health Insurance Fund Administration, for the year 2018. Data analysed included annual patient numbers, case numbers and prevalence of care utilisation per 100,000 population according to age groups and sex. The following health insurance treatment categories were included into our study: general practice care, home care, in- and outpatient care, medical imaging, laboratory diagnostics, drugs and medical aids. Patients were identified with the following code of the International Classification of Diseases 10th revision: E1190. The highest national patient numbers were in general practice care: 252,012 men, 289,126 women, in total 541,138 patients, followed by pharmaceutical utilisation (163,326 men, 180,624 women, in total 343,950 patients), and outpatient care (136,053 men, 153,057 women, in total 289,110 patients). Based on patient numbers in pharmaceutical usage, prevalence in 100,000 among men was 3,496.1 patients, among women 3,537.0, in total 3,517.5 patients. Prevalence is over 10% above patients aged 60 or older and they give 72.69% of the patient population. Regarding sex, 47.5% of men and 52.5% of women used pharmaceuticals. In Hungary, the number of diabetic patients diagnosed without complications is high. Given that they may potentially develop some complications within a few years, increasing the associated disease burden, prevention and timely treatment are of pivotal importance.
