An optimal SVG LVRT control strategy for suppressing transient overvoltage

Transient overvoltage in large-scale wind farms integration area has become one of the main factors limiting the transmission capacity. Most wind farms are equipped with reactive power compensation devices such as static VAR generator(SVG), but the unreasonable SVG control strategy during low voltage ride through may worsen the transient overvoltage phenomenon. Combained with China’s technical rule for dynamic reactive power compensation devices equipped in wind farms, this paper firstly clarifies the working mechanism and structure of SVG. Then the generation mechanism of transient overvoltage after wind farm fault is discussed, as well as the reasons why SVG affects the transient overvoltage level. On this basis, this paper puts forward the SVG low-voltage ride through optimization strategy for suppressing transient overvoltage. Finally, a simulation is carried out based on an example to show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
