Implementation of video recording with immediate feedback in real-time consultation in general practice. Feasibility and interest quatitative study

Background. Immediate feedback with video-recorded consultations is under-used in France. Research questions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and the interest of this teaching method as a training and assessment tool of the learning process of general practitioner (GP) trainees at Universite Paris-Est Creteil (France). Method. During the period November 2017 -October 2018, trainees in ambulatory training courses at Universite Paris-Est Creteil collected quantitative data about recording consultations with a video camera. The trainees' level of satisfaction was measured by means of a questionnaire at the end of their traineeship. Descriptive and univariate logistic regression were performed. Results. Sixty-seven trainees were recruited and 43 of them (64.2%) actively participated in the study; 607 video recordings and 243 feedbacks with trainers were performed. Few patients (10.9%) refused the video-recording. Most trainees (72.1%) considered video recording with immediate feedback to be a relevant learning tool. It made it possible for the participants to observe their difficulties and their achievements. "Relation, communication, patient-centered care" was the most worked on skill, with non-verbal communication as particular point. Time was the main limiting factor of this teaching method. Most trainees were in favor of its generalization in their university course. Conclusions. Video recording with immediate feedback in real-time consultation seems to be to be feasible but needs to be adapted to training sites in terms of time and logistics. It seems to be useful in the development of communication skills while enhancing the place of immediate feedback in the general practice curriculum. It could also constitute an additional tool for the certification of GP trainees.
