Role of sugars in crop stress tolerance under challenging environment

The world population is increasing at an alarming rate and is posing negative impacts on food production and natural resources. The unsettling human interference into the climax of environment has increased to a great extent. Moreover, under the era of climate change, the effect of resulted environmentally induced changes has become worse on important plant processes. Plants are sessile creatures and confronted by myriads of abiotic pressures. They are continuously exposed to stress factors that alter their metabolism synergistically or antagonistically. The research focus in current times has been devoted to study the impacts of abiotic stress factor on plant processes and accumulation of various compounds so as to gain insights into the underlying mechanisms. Research in plant sugars has gained attention as they regulate cascades of morphophysiological processes directly or indirectly under various abiotic stresses. Studying the adaptation and responses of plants under various stress factors and the response of various kinds of sugars is crucial and interesting as well. The present chapter enlightens the response of sugars under abiotic stress conditions and the multifaceted role played by them under such conditions.
