•Some preschool children write words in ways that do not make sense based on sound.•Prephonological spellings reveal some knowledge of graphotactics: how letters combine.•These spellings do not necessarily reflect lack of alphabet knowledge or phonological awareness.•Prephonological spelling near the end of preschool presages poorer reading and spelling later on.
