•Number, number relations, and number operations explain a significant amount of variance in mathematics achievement a year later at the mean level.•Some relationships between early number competence and future mathematics achievement are contingent upon level of achievement.•Number operations is more highly related to future math achievement for the highest achievers than estimated at the mean level.
