•Formation of mucus plugs has been observed in critically ill COVID-19 patients.•Proteomic analyses of airway mucus were obtained by bronchoscopy or induced sputum.•Eight proteins specifically present in COVID-19 were found compared with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.
