Functionally graded calcium zirconate molds with alginate-based spray coating for titanium investment casting

•Investment casting molds with functionally graded layer structure were developed.•Spraying and alginate gelation resulted in a high surface quality of front coatings.•Microstructure adjustment prevented cracking of the graded shell molds.•Titanium cast parts without alpha case layer were obtained.
