Business History: Sustaining Excellence It is a source of great pride that in its sixth decade Business History continues to flourish. Apart from having sustained the journal’s reputation as one of the premier journals in the field, we continually adapt our strategies to meet the various challenges that face academic publishing at a time when higher education across the world is undergoing radical change. Our aims in writing this editorial are, firstly, to explain our approach, and secondly, to outline how we intend to manage the journal over its next phase of development. Although there is no sign of an increase in competition since the last editorial, the pressures associated with regular research assessment programmes in an increasing number of countries, ranking exercises and changes in publishing practices, all place enormous pressure on the need to sustain the highest standards of editing and writing. As a consequence, ‘Sustaining Excellence’ will continue to be our motif as we plan for the journal’s next fiveyear cycle.
