Comparative Analysis for Optimal Positioning of PMU

The phasor measurement unit (PMU) is a supreme device for operating, protecting, and controlling power networks. It supplies real time synchronized data of voltage and current of all the buses of the system. But it is not economical to provide PMU’s into every bus of the network, because of its high cast and advance facilities for communication purposes. The main reason for solving the optimal PMU position problem is to decrease the requirement of PMU’s in such a way that the whole network becomes observable. In this paper, we use global search optimization and particle swarm optimization for solving the OPP problem. The simulation of the presented approach is verified by using MATLAB on different IEEE bus networks. The results show that the whole network becomes observable by placing PMU’s at a specific location. For checking the efficiency of our presented approach, the results are compared with different approaches.
