•Fatigue behaviour of SEBM Ti-6Al-4V assessed using a four point bend test method.•Material machined at shallow (<1.00 mm) depths, typical of industrial finishing.•Fatigue improvement following machining to a sufficient depth.•Pore distribution analysis shows removal of LOF in the 0.5–1.5 mm sub-surface.
