摘要
Identification and estimation of damage in a sub-structure is challenging as the visual picture of the sub-structure is never known and the state of the structure or foundation can be inferred only through its static and dynamic response. The paper presents the results of a computational modeling of the wave propagation process through a prismatic axial rod representing an end-bearing pile foundation with known damage. Wave propagation is modeled as a transient dynamic problem and the response velocity of the axial element (pile) at its tip is computed and its effect on the length, magnitude of damage, damping and other parameters is illustrated. An alternative method, complementary to wave propagation method is also proposed, which makes use of the vibration parameters to estimate the damage. This method can be used in circumstances, where the wave propagation response is in-significant and could not be separated from the general dynamic response. An experiment conducted to validate the vibration based damage identification methodology is reported.
