摘要
fellows versus programs having at least one female fellow. Results A total of 121 of 176 gastroenterology fellowship programs had information available on their websites and were included in the study.Of the 1172 fellows at these programs, 33.7% (n=396) fellows were female.12.4% (n=15) of fellowship programs had no female fellows, whereas 0.8% (n=1) programs had no male fellows.Programs with at least one female fellow (compared to no female fellows) were significantly larger (total number of fellows: 10±4 vs 4±2, p=<0.001),more likely to have at least one female faculty (95% vs 69%, p=0.009), had higher proportion of female division chiefs (8.8% vs 0%, p=0.03), and were more likely to have >10 years of ACGME accreditation (80% vs 43%, p=0.013).There were no significant differences in the age and gender of the PD between the two groups. On multivariate analysis, the only independent predictor of hiring at least one female fellow was the size of the program [ p=0.026)].Conclusion: Thirty-four percent of gastroenterology fellows are female and 1 in 8 programs have no female fellows.Larger fellowship programs with female faculty and greater than 10 years of ACGME accreditation were more likely to hire female fellows.Future studies are required to explore reasons for underrepresentation of females in gastroenterology fellowship programs.
