•The teachers believed that students’ science learning was influenced by several factors including family, student, school, mass media and technology, and institution-related.•In some cases the factors that influence science learning were perceived by the teachers to be positive and in other cases, they were viewed negatively.•The teachers believed the most influential factor was the students themselves, followed by the family and the school.
