A novel method of fast and efficient current control and tracking for solar water pumping system in rural areas consisting of solar photovoltaic (PV) fed field oriented sensorless control of induction motor drive (IMD) are proposed in this paper. A new decoupled current controller based on improved sliding mode for an induction motor drive is presented. In this technique, two sliding surfaces are chosen to control and to regulate the decoupled currents on d-axis and q-axis respectively. For the sensorless operation of the drive, two speed signals, slip speed and synchronous speed are estimated to obtain the motor speed. This novel approach for control of currents, serves several benefits in water pumping for agricultural purposes, such as fast response during dynamics, effective and efficient decoupling of currents and most important feature is robustness to variation in motor parameters. The proposed system in a single stage PV topology with switching signals are obtained directly for voltage source inverter without requiring any conventional PWM methods in between to drive the IM, coupled to pump load, is designed and implemented in the laboratory.
