Phase Relationships in the Yb-Co-Fe Ternary System at 803 K

Phase relationships in the Yb-Co-Fe ternary system at 803 K were investigated by x-ray diffraction techniques, with powder metallurgy used for preparation of the samples. It was confirmed that six binary compounds, Fe 23 Yb 6 , Fe 17 Yb 2 , Co 2 Yb, Co 3 Yb, Co 17 Yb 2 , and CoFe, exist in this system at 803 K; Co 17 Yb 2 and Fe 17 Yb 2 form a continuous solid solution (Co 17−X Fe X ) Yb 2 (0 ≤ X ≤ 17). The maximum solid solubility of Co in Fe and Fe in Co were about 26 at.% Co and 15 at.% Fe, respectively. No ternary compounds were detected. The isothermal section of the phase diagram of the ternary system Yb-Co-Fe at 803 K was found to consist of eight single-phase regions, twelve two-phase regions, and five three-phase regions.
