摘要
Purpose The treatment with bisphosphonates is established in controlling bone erosion by inhibition of osteoclast action. They are recognized to be useful in the management of osteoporosis, bone metastatic malignancy, multiple myeloma and Paget’s disease. The aim of this review is to present the role of BP’s in the management of other intraosseous lesions that cause bone resorption. Materials and methods Comprehensive reviewing of the literature, regarding bone lesions, revealed a number of studies where bisphosphonates could be useful as primary or as adjunctive therapy. Results The use of bisphosphonates therapy proved effective for fibrous dysplasia, Gaucher’s disease, chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis, osteogenesis imperfecta and orthopedic implants improving osseointegration and stabilization of implants. Conclusions BPs are pharmacological agents that inhibit osteoclastic bone resorption and may be useful in the primary or adjunctive treatment of many intraosseous lesions. Although all the reported studies, in the English literature, concerning the treatment of such lesions with BPs contain small number of patients, and the most of these are uncontrolled, the results suggest that BPs may have a significant role for the therapy of these lesions. Further investigations are needed to determine the potential role of bisphosphonates for the treatment of bone lesions.
