Scmesh: Solar-Powered Wireless Smart Camera Mesh Network

Wireless smart visual sensor networks find a wide range of applications such as environmental and habitat monitoring, object tracking, and surveillance, to name a few. Unlike sensor networks that target telemetry applications, which typically use "scalar" sensors, visual sensor networks produce richer, multi-media information. As a result, they raise additional challenges related to reaching adequate balance between satisfying application requirements and efficient use of node-, network-, and energy resources.In this paper, we introduce SCmesh, a mesh network of solar-powered wireless smart camera nodes. SCmesh enables visual sensing nodes to transfer video files, as well as collaborate on tasks such as visual processing, event detection, and object tracking. It allows node-to-node, as well as scoped-or full broadcast communication. For point-to-point communication, SCmesh uses on-demand power-aware multi-path routing to transfer video files efficiently. We deploy SCmesh in a smart visual sensor network testbed, demonstrate its functionality, and show its performance.
